Norway’s official search for “Best International Feature Film” 97th Oscar category in 2025
Scenario
Armand, a 6-year-old boy, is accused of crossing the finish line with his best friend from elementary school.
The feature debut of Halfdan Ullman Tønder, grandson of Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullman, is a part allegorical, part naturalistic montage about 21st-century parenting and the education system and their perception of ” an unfortunate incident” between two 6-year-old boys
Renate Reinsve is Armand’s eccentric mother, the perpetrator of the affair in question, and when she is scrutinized by her son’s teacher, the school management and the other boy’s parents, the film gradually descends into a chasm between relationships – a void from which good things can never emerge.
Ullman Tønder’s aim and position are strong, as is his artistic expression, clearly inspired by the works of his grandfather and perhaps to some extent by Kubrick
And even if the narrative itself sometimes feels bumpy and the film unevenly edited, Armand is in many ways a return to and homage to clean cinema, for which he deserves praise.
